Chef Hat Drawing: Easy Cartoon Steps

Are you simultaneously hungry AND artistic? This easy cartoon style chef hat drawing tutorial may be for you! This lesson is part of my deep dive into the wild world of hat drawing happiness.

As background, I am an artist and teacher named Ms. Marshall who adores sharing satisfyingly simple ideas for cute drawings to bring a smile to your face. I hand-illustrate each and every drawing on this site, and invite you to embrace that it’s ok if our lines aren’t perfectly straight, as long as we’re sketching with joy. On to the lesson…

How to draw a chef hat
How to draw a chef hat: Start with black and white.

Now before we begin, a note: As I explained with our party hat drawing tutorial, feel free to make any alterations from these instructions. For instance, if you’d rather not have the cartoon eyes on the hat, just take them out!

1. Decide which variety of chef hat or “toque” you’ll draw.

So, it turns out that there are a variety of different types of chef hats or “toques,” each with its own symbolism! For our purposes, I’ve selected the type of toque that has a band at the bottom, then a tall body (like our top hat drawing), and a poof at the top. It kind of looks like broccoli if you’re not careful with your color choices!

Add a pale color to the hat.

2. Add shading in light blue.

As we saw with our snowman drawing, something white (like this hat) can be given depth and shading by adding light blue or purple around the edges. White objects don’t have to be aesthetically boring!

3. Pick an appetizing background design.

As you can see from my illustration above, I tried at first to create a background that looked like splattered food from a zealous cook stirring too many things — but honestly it just ended up looking gross. Then I went back to the palette from my cute drawings of food and created the more pleasing swirled background, below.

Congratulations — you’ve finished your lovely cartoon work of art! What is the chef cooking today? (Pop over to our cherry drawing for a yummy idea…) Now let’s see a time-lapse video of the sketching process in the embedded video.
