Ready to get silly? It’s time to add some jester hat drawing instructions to our hat drawing tutorials! Here are easy steps in a fun cartoon style to create the cap of the classic “fool” clown of yore.
As background, my name is Ms. Marshall and I’m a teacher and artist who enjoys explaining simple and satisfying ways to sketch such things as a chef hat drawing. I hand-draw each and every illustration on this site. Ready for the lesson? Let’s go!

First, a disclaimer. As I explained with my top hat drawing tutorial, you do not need to follow these instructions exactly (feel free to take out the googly eyes), and your lines don’t need to be perfect. We’re humans, not robot art machines, and that’s what makes us great!
Jester Hat Drawing
1. Sketch a base with three pointy “tails” and bells.
Historically, jester caps had three “tails” to symbolize the ears and tail of a donkey. Sketch these to flop downward, as we did with our Christmas hat.
At the end of each “tail,” draw a circle to represent a round bell. Indeed, “fools” and jesters throughout time wore noisemakers at the end of their hat tips to add excitement to their performances.

2. Add bright colors, then shading.
Jesters dressed in order to attract attention and to entertain, so make sure you use bright colors to ink in your drawing. The more ridiculous the better! Then add shading along the sides to show depth.
I’d recommend making the bells an exciting yellow, then adding some purple in somewhere for a visual “pop,” since the opposite of yellow is purple, and thus that complementary color provides harmony and contrast.

3. Consider adding wild patterns!
Jesters are known for their zany, “out of the box” style, so consider adding in some zany patterns to your sketch, as we did with our party hat drawing. Stripes and swirls are always fun. Don’t forget to spice up the background, too.

Congratulations — your cartoon is now finished! Just as we did with our graduation hat drawing, want to see a time-lapse video of how my art process went? Check out the embedded video…
Jester Hat Drawing, in Sum
I hope this tutorial on how to make a jester hat drawing has been fun and useful. Now that I’ve finished this, and our winter hat drawing lesson, what should I teach next? Do share!
