Get your fashionable summer outfit ready, because today’s installment of our hat drawing series features an easy, cute sun hat drawing! We will use a simple cartoon line art style that will put a smile on your face.
As background, my name is Ms. Marshall, and I’m an artist and teacher who adores sharing easy-to-follow art tutorials and drawing prompts for all ages. I hand-draw each and every illustration on this site. On to the lesson…
Sun Hat Drawing
First a quick note: As I explained with my jester hat drawing, I tend to add cute googly eyes to everything I sketch — but you don’t have to! Feel free to leave them out, and to alter any other detail you desire. Art is about making your own creative choices!
1. Sketch the dome.
Unlike our chef hat drawing, the dome of our sun hat fits closely to the head, so isn’t huge. In fact it’s dwarfed by the size of the brim… which is our next order of business.
2. Decide the shape for your wide brim.
The giant, floppy brim is the key feature that makes a sun hat a sun hat — but there are several different ways you can draw it. Here, I’ve chosen to make it so floppy that it curves upward, but you can also have the bottom tip down like our mushroom drawings — or stick straight out for a firmer line… or do a combination of the three options!
3. Ink in a sash and decorations.
Sun hats often have a sash around the dome (similar to our top hat drawing), and also frequently feature decorations like bows and flowers. I’ve drawn some very simple flowers here to adorn our head covering.
4. Add exciting colors.
Now it’s time to add color! I’ve chosen a mix of purples and pinks (see what colors make purple here), then decorated the sash, flowers, and background in complementary and contrasting colors to help the piece of art POP! Check out my article on the opposite of purple for more on which shades are best.
5. Leverage shading and highlights.
As we saw with our party hat drawing, adding darker shading around the edges and lighter highlights in the middle is the key to making a drawing look three-dimensional. Don’t forget to do that for the ribbon, too. Congrats — your work of art is now complete! Let’s check out the time-lapse video of my piece now.

Sun Hat or Sunhat (One or Two Words)?
As an English teacher, I can’t resist a quick writing lesson here to answer the query: is the spelling “sun hat” (two words) or “sunhat” (one word)? In fact, the correct spelling is “sun hat” as two words — just as the correct spelling of the word “every time” has two words, not the wrong version, “everytime.”
