Our cute, easy food drawings are taking a sweet twist today as we dive into the world of cake drawing! This slice of birthday (or any celebration) confection will bring a smile to your face, or the face of whoever you gift the artwork to.
As background, my name is Ms. Marshall, and I’m a long-time artist and teacher who delights in simple and adorable tutorials for cartoons in a simple yet adorable line-art style. I hand-draw each and every piece of art on this site — from cute mushroom drawings, to everything else. On to the lesson…
Cake Drawing
Note: As with all of my cute drawings, I’ve added googly eyes to this one, but you’re welcome to leave them out — or make any other alterations so this sketch suits what you’d like to create. Art is about personal choices and expression, so go wild!
1. Sketch the wedge.
To draw a slice of cake, start with a triangle on top, then make it three-dimensional by adding a rectangle below. As with our frog drawing, you’ll probably want to start with erasable pencil to sketch the lines first, so you can fix any curves or angles that aren’t looking quite right.
2. Add icing around the cake slice.
The icing provides a ton of visual excitement for our cake slice drawing, so add it in amply. In my example here, I’ve put it in a thick layer between the two halves of the cake, as well as in a layer on top and in the back, and in two big poofs along the edges — inspired by our cloud drawing lines!
3. Remember the cake candle.
Whether you’re drawing a birthday cake or another type of festive slice, adding a candle imbues your art with sparkle and shine. See my longer candle drawing tutorial for more on how to do this.
4. Add color to our cake drawing.
If you look at the most popular cake recipes, they’re often variations on the color brown. Now, while I love brown in its own right (I have an entire article on what colors make brown when mixed together!), I contend that it’s more exciting to use other colors for your cake cartoon here. In this case, I’ve chosen a pastel palette.
5. Put in shading and highlights.
As we learned in our cherry drawing tutorial, adding darker shading around the edges and lighter highlights in the middle of something can help it look more three-dimensional. Though I opted not to, you can also experiment with textures to show how spongy the cake is. Congratulations — your work of art is now done! Let’s see it in time-lapse form now…
