Candle Drawing: Easy Cartoon Instructions

Our cute drawing ideas round-up has a fiery new friend. Yess indeed — it’s time for a easy candle drawing tutorial in a cute and simple cartoon style!

As background, I am an artist and teacher named Ms. Marshall, and I hand-draw each and every illustration on this site. As you may have noticed in my recent mushroom drawing lesson, I have a particular passion for making everyday objects look adorable. Time for the tutorial!

As I explained with my umbrella drawing, feel free to change any parts of the instructions here. Art is all about making your own unique creative choices!

1. Sketch an upright tube with erasable pencil.

Watching the time-lapse video of my art process, below, you’ll see that I began our piece with straight vertical lines that formed a tube. We can then begin to add in the wax “drips” along the sides, which I placed to look like arms and ears! As I explained with our cherry drawing tutorial, I always recommend starting with an erasable sketch so that you can experiment with curves and angles.

Add in bright colors and a dark background.

2. Draw a wick, then a flame with three parts.

The key to making your candle look like it’s on fire is to have multiple colors in your wick’s flame. I recommend three. (Side note, speaking of fire: Check out my illustrated “Fiery or Firey” English language lesson!)

3. Create the candlestick for our candle drawing.

The history of candles goes back to 3000 B.C.E. (whoa!) as demonstrated by candlesticks that are still intact — so don’t forget ours here! I chose a curved body to simulate glass or smooth metal or ceramic.

4. Add shading and highlights.

As we saw with our simple spider drawing, adding darker shading around the edges and lighter highlights in the middle is key to making our art look three-dimensional. I recommend making the background a dark blue to simulate nighttime, which will make the brightly-colored candle pop out at the viewer.

Congratulations — your art is now complete! Now let’s watch the time-lapse video of it being created from start to finish, as we did with our octopus drawing.
