Today’s illustrated installment of how to avoid commonly misspelled words is a tricky one. Is the spelling whitch or witch and which? What about whitched and whitcher? Read on to find out!
As background, my name is Ms. Marshall, and I’ve been an English teacher for nearly twenty years, now. I’m also an artist, and hand-draw each and every illustration for the lessons on this site, such as “Greatful vs. Grateful.” On to today’s tutorial…

Whitch, Explained
The good news is that in the three spellings — whitch, witch, and which — one is simply incorrect, and should never be used, like “seperately.” That misspelling is: “whitch” with “hit” in the middle.
Throw that spelling in the trash, along with other commonly used mistakes like “weither.” They are a mere figment of the imagination, and hold no meaning! The same goes for variants like “whitched” or “whitcher” or “bewhitched.” Those are all wrong.

Witch or Which
Now that we know which spelling is incorrect, let’s define the other two ones that actually ARE real words — unlike “gaurd.” First, “witch” (with “it” in the middle) is defined as a magical woman who is often depicted as wearing a dark-colored, pointy hat with a wide brim.
(See my lesson on how to make a witch hat drawing if you’re artistically inclined!) Meanwhile, “which” is a pronoun that is either asking to specify between options (ex: “Which witch is sitting there?”) or indicating something previously mentioned in order to give more information, like: “That is the spell which witches love.”
Whitch, in Sum
I hope this lesson on whitch vs. witch and which has been helpful and enjoyable! To remember the spelling rules we discussed, just look at my cartoon above, where an angry witch is yelling, “I’ll HIT you if you write ‘wHITch!”
